CAMBRIDGE WEST.
Thk Pnkekura Mutual Improvement Society met attain on Friday evening. On this occasion the progranuno was left entirelv in the hands of the ladies, and it is needless to add that the meetidg was admirably conducted. The ladies elected Miss Nixon as their president and she fulfilled her duties in an easy, graceful, and eloquent manner. Indeed as a public speaker, if Miss Nixon possessed a etronger voice, she would have few superiors in the district inclusive of both sexes. The programme consisted of an essay, "A Trip to Tatipo," by Miss Hyatt; reading on "Ancient fashionable Ladies," bv Miss Garland; sueech on " Woman's Sphere," by the lady President; essay, "The Women of India," by Miss Hooper; speech on " Men's Rights," by Mrs Cudworth. The meeting was then thrown open to the gentlemen for critictsm which was largely indulged in. Several gentlemen complained that, the lady who spoke on " Men's Kights " made rather a short speech compared with the importance of the subject; but the ruling of the chair was that " the men have their rights, therefore little can be said on the subject," and that " little hud been said by the speaker referred to." It goes without sayinsr that this meeting attracted a crowded audience, and entertained it to. The next meeting will take the form of electioneering speeches, when H. Bloomfield will appear as a Government, and Mr Geo. Comer, as an Opposition candidate for the suffrages (male and female) of PukekuiM. On the motion of Mr Hyatt it was agreed to alter the date of the next meeting from the 2!) th to the 27th inst., so as to give members an opportunity of attending the Cambridge Chrysanthemum Show. The ni xt meeting will therefore be hqld on Wednesday, 27th inst. j
