SCHOOL HOLIDAY REGULA TIONS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—The new regulations of the Auckland Board of Education that bind down School Committees in such a way that they can io no wise alter the holidays to suit the varying conditions and exigencies of country life are having just now a prejudical effect on the attendance rolls of onr schools. At the present moment in many instances the attendances have diminished one-third, or even more, through the children being engaged potato-picking ; yet, though the effect is disheartening ;ilike to the teaching staff and the committee, the latter are powerless to rectify it by the simple expedient of granting a holiday for a week or two at sucli o juncture, and similarly curtailing needed holidays. So serious has the evil become that a memo., jointly signed by most of the Wnikato committees, is about being forwarded to the Board ot Education, so that the present cast-iron rules may be modified, and better adopted to meet the requirements of country schools generally.— Yo;irs truly, Wμ. Johns. Te Awauiutii. I'.S.—l should feel obliged if those chairmen of committees who at present hold the memo, above referred to would kindly sign at once and forward on to the others indicated without delay, so that these might return to the writer not later than tho 20th iust. It will then be placed before the Uiiard of Education ere the present committee's term of office fxpires.—W. J.
