UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE

(BY ELECTKIO TKLKGKAPII, —COFYKKIIIT.) Loxdox, April 9. The annual race between the eightoar crews representing Oxford and Cambridge Universities was rowed today over the usual course on the Thames from Putney to Mortlake. Oxford winning the toss, selected the Middlesex side of the river. The Cambridge crew, who were f ho favourites, got the worst of the start, but by tho time the Craven steps were reached they hid made up the lost ground, and were slightly leading their opponents Between this point and Hammersmith Bridge Oxford forged gradually ahead and shot past the bridge with three-quarters of a length to the good, increasing their lead until they had the advantage of two and α-quurtcr lengths on passing under the Barnes railway bridge. Here the Cambridge stroke called on his men, and a brave spurt had the effect of reducing the distance between tho two boats to one and a-half lengths, by which Oxford won. The time, which was l'Jm. '225., is over two minutes faster than tho time recorded last year. Later In the University boat race Oxford boat the record time at every point throughout the course.
