One hundred and sixty pounds has been collected for the athletic team. The New Zealand Shipping Company has granted considerable reduction in fares. BEEFTON, Last Night. James Nansmith, a well-known resident, met his death by drowning this morning under the following circumstances. He had been suffering from influenza for some days, and was under medical treatment. At 3.30 this morning the night watchman of the hotel where he was residing heard him leave the building, aud as he did not return raised an alarm. The river was dragged, and the body found. Deceased complained to the landlady of pains in his head and insomnia. It is supposed he had a relapse this morning, and, becoming delirious, wandered out, and coming to the river bank, which is close to the hotel, fell in. TIMARU, Last Night. There are 11 feet of water in the Elginshire. The ketch went for meat this morning but got none. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The Masonic Lodge Abercorn, No. 472, I.C. (Gisborne), has decided to join the N.Z. Grand Lodge.
