TE AWAMUTU.
Social. —A very successful social gathering took place last Tuesday evening in the Wesleyan Church building. A strong committee of ladies consisting of Mrs Millar, Mrs Kirk, Mrs Howard, Miss Kirk, Miss Millar and Miss Gittos, had worked the affair up, and they deserve great credit tor the capital way everything passed off. The Rev. Mr Gittos presided in his well-known felicitous manner although I am sorry to siy he is still very much crippled with rheumatism. The following programme was carried out with great spirit, besides which the choir at intervals rendered some sacred pieces, and Mr Andrew and Mr R. T. Millar gave short addresses Recitation, "Voiceless Chimes," Miss Kirk; song, "Anchored," Mr G. 1). Hunter; song, '•The Stars of Jordan," Mrs Kirk ; recitation, '' Grumble Corner," Mr S. Holloway; song, "Sings the Nightingale," Miss B. North ; duet, "The Gipsy Conutess," Mrs Hunter and Mr Vause ; song, "The Better Land," Miss Millar; song, "The Song That Reached My Heart," Mrs Hunter; reading, "Aurelia Maria," Mr Cruickshank ; song, " Over the Hill to the Poorhouse," Mr Vause ; trio, " Forgive Blessed Shade," Mrs Hunter, Miss North and Mr Hunter; song, " Consider the Lillies," Mrs Andrew ; reading, " The Bashful Man," Mr Price ; duet. "To the Woods," Mrs Hunter and Miss Millar. Mr Kirk proposed a vote of thanks to the helpers, and after the benediction refreshments and tea were handed round among the audience by the ladies' committee. Musical S"Oiktv.—A meeting of members of the Musical Society was held last Wednesday evening in the hall, to consider their position now they had lost their old conductor Mr Burgess. Mr Vause was in the chair, and explained his reasons for calling the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were confirmed, and then the Secretary showed the position of the Society: It W as free from debt, and the piano was virtually paid for. The piano had been vested in three pormanent trustees. After some discussion, Mr Vause proposed and Mrs Androw seconded that the Society carry on as before. This motion was carried unanimously. Mr D. G. Cruickshank then moved that Mr Long be asked to act ns conductor. Mr Vause seconded this and it was carried. Mr Long expressed his willingness to conduct and thanked them for their confidence in him. The meeting then terminated ; aftor which the members had a good practice at somo glees under their new conductor.
