(by elkotric telegraph—copyright.) London, March S. During a disscussion in the House of Commons on the war estimates, Mr E. Stanhope, Secretary of State for the War Department, mentione I that the trial of smokeless powder had been attended with success, and that the whole of the forces were to bo armed with modern weapons. The defence, he said, of the coaling stations was practically completed, and the submarine mines provided throughout the empire afforded an effective defence, which could be increased on short notice. He also stated that tho comforts of the new Barracks would tend to induce the enlistment of re* cruits.
During the discussion on the war cstimatos.Mr E. Stanhope expressed regret that the local Governments concerned had not seen their way to undertako the necessary works at King George's Sound and in Torres Strait. The guns for the fortifications were ready. He also complained of the apathy of the Canadian Government in neglecting the defence of Esquiuiau.lt.
