A STEAMER ASHORE.

BY TELRORAPH.—PIIKSS ASSOCIATION). Timarij, List Night. Thb Elginshire, a steamer of 4571) tins and 3000 horsepower, under Captain Millar, It N., loft Oaranru at about midnight m, Tuesday for Timaru. There was n dense loe along the coast, and the vessel cot off ln>r course landward. She was observed off Normaiiby. going along close to the he»cn, by a platelayer, who ran down and sung out to those on board that the steamer wis out of her course and in daneer. He was nsked where thoy were, mid replied five miles to the sooth of Tnnaru, and at the tame time telling them to stand out to sea southward from that spot straight and clear the beach. Just north the dolomite reef runs out, and the steamer, in turning her head seaward, went on to the rocks. This news wa". brought to town by a. horseman. The tug Mana then wont outside in the foe looking for the steamer. About 10 a.m. the fog cleared, and the harbour-master on the"tug, being informed of th-accident by Mr Bullock, the ship's agent here, who went in a boat to look for the tug, the Mana went straight away to Normanby, and passed a steel hawser and tried to help the steamer over the reef. She moved very slightly at high water. At the latest report the tug was parsing a tow-rope to the stern of the steamer to try and pull her back. No news has come from the vessel yet, ouly what has been observed from the shore. ,ii The steamer is on the reef only two hundred yards or so—not balf-a-niile—from the shore. It is not known here what cargo is on board. She came from the North to O.imaru, and is probably nearly full. It is expected that they will jettison the cargo if the vessel is not Boated off by the stern tow. There is too much surf on the beach for safo landing by boat, hence no news from the vossel.
