THE ALEXANDRA BRIDGE.
Wk can sympathise with the Alexandra people in the awkward position they are placed in, owing to the closing of the Waipa bridge. Only those who knew how generally this old structure was made use of, not only by the settlers living upon the west bank of the river, but by the Alexandra residents themselvei—all the firewood, fencing, etc., from the bushos in Pirongia being brought over it—can understand the l«ss and inconvenience involved in its being closed. However, there seems to be no help for it. The bridge is old and very unsafe, the county engineer declining to accept the responsibility of any traffic over it, and the amount required to erect another, viz., some seven or eight hundred pounds, is quite beyond the means available in a small district. The closing of the bridge may also unfavourably affect the settlement of the waste lands on the slopes of Pirongia. Much of this land is of fair quality, and it was hoped, would have been thrown open at a moderate rate, and occupied by bona fide settlers.
