(BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION"). Wellington, Last Night-. The Premier lias recoived a cable message from the Agent-General stating that Lord Onslow's speech in Christchurch, in which he testified to the prudent intentions of Ministerial finance, lias had a re-assuring effect in financial circles in London. Ninety-seven factories have been returned as employers of labour, the number of hands ranging from 3 to 116. The City Council have £2700 in hand towards the purchase of books for the new library. The first instalment (£1750) is to be spent at once. The Government intend to introduce a Bill giving power to old soldiers to transfer their scrip. A number of claims, proved before a magistrate, have been paid in cash.
The R.M.s. Alameda, with the English mails of the 23rd ult., lsft San Francisco for Auckland on the 7th inst., three days late. The Mariposa, with the colonial mails, of the 30th ult., arrived at 'Frisco from Auckland on the ISth inst., contract date.
