The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report under date :— Adelaidk, January 28.—Wheat: Our market continues sternly. Towards the end of lint week considerable business was transacted at 4s 3d per bushel, at Port Adelaide, and buyers are now showing more disposition to operate at this price, but sellers seek an advance. Undr>r date 215 th inst. our London office wired an as follows :—" The market is slightly easier, and quotations are unchanged since last telegram "; but later public telegrams report hardening tendency in the market. —Oats (duty, 2s per cental): New Zealand feed nuts nra worth 2s 3d to 2< 4d per bushel, delivered in bnnd. Ddnkpin, January 28.—Grain.—Wheat: Apparently there is no life in the market for wheat—indeed, no sales of any consequence have taken place since tho close of the past year; in fnct, for pnme weeks before the closing ordinary quality could hardly be placed, the only demand existing being for Northern prime velvet, and now there seems to bo no demand for any description. Thiß state of matters is, no ilinbt, partly owinu to the less satisfactory position of the market at Florae, as advised from week to week, but mainly due to the fact that large stocks of flour are still on hind, which will have to be placed before the new wheat is fairly on the market; and now, to effect a more speedy clearance, millers have reduced prices by £1 per ton, which will again have a further depressing effect on the position of the wheat market at the moment. Quotations are aeain merely nominal, say, for best milling Tuscan and velvet, 4sGd to 4s i)d; medium to good, 4s to 43 3d. —Oats: The demand for these is gradually weakening, and the tendency evidently towards lower prices. Buyers now are less hopeful of the future, and are therefore more cautious in their operations, declining to pnrchase except at a reduction of Id to ljd per bushel on prices lately current. Advices regarding the tone of the market at Home have not been quite so satisfactory lately. The absence of orders from Australia also contributes to the weakness now pervading this market; and although the quantity on offer is small, we don't see anything in the near future that would be likely to bring about an improvement in the demand, more especially considering harvest is so near. Meantime we quote prime millinsr, Is to Is 8(J ; best stnut bright feed, Is 7d to Is 7Jd ; mddintn, Is 6d to Is 6Jd.— Grass seed : Some samples of new ryegrass seed are now on the market, but so far no business has transpired, and, until the market has been more fully supplied, and a more accurate idea of the quantity available, prices will hardly be fixed ; but it is ) quite clear in the meantime that farmers undressed seed will be rather difficult to place, except at prices much lower relatively than those to be secured for properly machine-dressed. Cocksfoot seed has no inquiry, and, in the absence of sales, we can hardly give quotations.—Potatoes : The market is glutted ; no demand for more than half the quantity coming forward. Prices range from 25s to fiOs per ton for new kidneys.—Chaff : Market steady at last week's quotations—viz., 65s to 70s for best.—Dairy produce : Market quiet. Butter slow of sale ; best dairy-made, in Pond's boxes, lid to 7d ; factory-made, 10d to lid per lb. Factory-made cheese, medium size, 4d to ; loaf shape, to 5d per lb.
