MR W. J. HUNTER'S SHEEP FAIR.

There was a very good attendance of buyers at Mr Hunter's sheep fair at Ohaupo yesterday, which was considerably augmented by a larorn nnmher of Maoris from the Kin? Country, who wan both buyers and sellers. As regard* the tone of the market, we are quits within bounds in saying that the bidding was much more animated than at Mr McNieol's sale a fortnight aeri., for-the reason wa imagine, that vendors hnJ realised that last year's prices were not ruling this season, and that they would have to modify their views as regards prices. In reporting Mr MeNicol's sale we remarked that prices improved as the sale progressed ; but yesterday it was cleat that buyers had come to the sale prepared to do business. The demand for young well-bred ewes and well-conditioned lambs was keen, and in these classes there was an advance of from 6d to Is per head, and the supply was not equal to the demand. Settlers requiring this class of stock must be prepared to go closer to last year's prices than has yet been the case, as several good lots were withdrawn, not having reached the vendors' reserves. There seems to be a general disposition to get out of old and indifferently bred sheep, and replace with younger and better bred ones. Mr H. Long topped the market for two and four-too*h Lincoln ewes, at 14s and 14s 9d respectively, Mr Jolly withdrawing a very even lot at 15s. In lambs, Mr J. Littie obtained the first price (8s 9d) for a nice little lot of fat lambs. The prices obtained for Messrs Wallace and Rutherford's rams were not 30 go&d as at the previous sale. The best price obtained was for one of Mr Rutherford's, for which Mr Gardner, of Rukuhia, gave 5£ euineas. The following is a detailed account of the sale :— s. d.
