(BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORHBSI'ONDKNT.) Auckland, Last Night. At the Police Court tn-day, Cyprian Nicholls, a hop beer manufacturer, was fined lO.< and costs for selling hop beer containing ten per cont of proif spirits. Mr Pond deposed that the liquor was about as intoxicating as light colonial ale. An interesting legal point was raised at the Police Court yesterday morning by Mr O'Meagher, who appeared for the defence in a cass of alleged trespass of cattle upon the railway lino at Newmarket. Robert .vlnrgan was the person charged, and Mr O'Meagher ? contended that the by-law .being repugnant to the Public Works Act of 1882, it was ultra vires under the Act of 1887. He mentioned that owing to the fence being out of repair, the cause of trespass was the neglect of the authorities. After hearing the argument, Dr Giles upheld the validity of the by-law, and inflicted a fine of 10s and costs. The German warship Buzzard arrived from Samoa this morning. At the Police Court before Dr. Giles, an intelligent looking Maori named Kerei Kaihau was charged that on 3rd February at Akaaka he did by Kina, a person acting under his direction, remove, displace, and alter the position of a flag being a survey murk set up for the purpose of a survey authorised by thn Government of New Zealand, the said Kersi Kaihau not being a person authorised so to do. After hearing the evidence the accused was committed for trial. The Dsvonport Ferry Company have declared a dividend of 10 per cent.
Charles Alexander, a sharebroker in his statement in bankruptcy attribute* his losses to unprofitable money investments and dull times. His unsecured debts amount to £772, and the secured to £2710, tha latter being about equivalent to the value of the security. His assets consist of 22.494 shares in six gold mines on which it is impossible to place a value at the present time, 172 Acrns of land at Tauranga worth about 5s per acre. The Northern Club will give a farewell dinner to the Governor on Monday evening.
