MR McNICOL'S RAM FAIR.
At Mγ McNicol's ram fair on Thursday,
it soon became apparent, from the lack of competition, that prices were going to he a long way below those obtained last year, but few people, we think, were prepared for so great a drop as was experienced. Tho supply was far beyond the demand, as not a half of those brought forward were sold. Whether it was the earlier date of
the sale, or that in anticipation of price: ruling as at laat year provision had beei made out«de, we cannot say, but fron whatever cause arising, the large buyer; last year were not to the fore on Thursday As regards the quality of the sheep, in exception can be taken in this rdapect. Tin animals yarded hy Messrs Seddon, Wallace Bosanko, and Rutherford wore really tirst rate, the latter breeder's being rnmadsabli fur their size and condition. Mr Seddoi tupped the market with a ram secured bi Mr C. J. Storey at 7jgs, Mr Rntherfort coming next with one purchased by Mr F Jolly, at 6£gs, and another seemed by M Bnnigh, at Gigs. Mr Wallace got fo: two of his sheep, and his average ot 4£rs to the fourteen catalogued under his naim was slightly aoove that "f the othe breeders mentioned above. For many year there hag bsen scarcely any attention givei to any other breed in Waikato excou Lincolns and the crosses tnerefr:>m. Fron time to time the Freezing Company havi drawn attention to the fact that cnrcasii with too much of the Lincoln were no suited to the Saste of the English con suiners. Probably with this in view, thi competition for Romney Marsh stud sheei on Thursday can be accounted for. i , gmall pen of five, brought in bv Mr Thoma Hunt, were eagerly competed for and sole at six guineas. With the exception of s few from Mr Maclean, all the Southdowi and Shropshire Down rams found pur ohasers; and a nice even lot of Borde teicesters from Mr John Reid, of Oainaru were taken up nt three and foiv guineas each. Mr E. B. Cox, of Taupiri was the largest buyer in this classs. To wards the close of the sale a lot of ancien and nondescript animals were pa<sp< through, prices ruling particularly low. I was during this time that Mr McNico remarked that this sort of thing would pu a stop to a lot of amateur breeding tha had been going on for the last year or twoa sentiment that seemed to be thoroughl; endorsed by all who heard it.
