MARKET REPORTS. Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report under date : Mklhohink January S.—Wheat: The agricultural journals havo published i stitrates of the wheat harvest of 1891-9J, which show a considerable reduction in l.lie actual yield of la*-t year, though they aro over the official statistics of tha 1 . season. This is duo to the fact, which has now been demonstrated by results, that the Government estimate of the wheat crop of 1890 01 was underrated by nearly 2,000,000 bushels. It is a matter for regret that such an error should have been made, aa it brined the official figures into disrppute, but under the present method of collecting the ntatistics it is, perhaps unavoidable. The estimate of the yield of the present harvest ia 12,785,000 bushels of wheat. Allowing for seed and consumption there Bhould bo a surplus for export of the new crop equal to 132,000 tons to which may be added some 15,000 tons of the old crop of wheat and flour in s-tuck and l.) course of shipuient ; this gives a total of 147,000 tons for shipment this year as against 182,500 tuns actually shipped away in 1891. Harvesting is proceeding briskly in the country districts, and deliveries are beginning to increase at the railway stations. A good deal of storing up-country is going on with doubtful results to formers. The London market is inactive and suffering from a glut of supplies, At our weekly sale buyers showed an eagerness to purchase New Wheat at 4s 4d. Market firm at 4s 4d. Upcountry quotations above Melbourne. Oat 9 A little better demand this week, but prices still low. We quote Calcutta and Algerian from Is 5d to Is 9d : Thin Whit* 1 , Is lid to 2s; Danish, 2s ljd to 2s 2Jd ; Stout, 2s 4Jd to 2s sd. Wellington, January 21.—Wheat: Market bare of supplies. Whole fowl wheat, 4s 3d to 4s Gd per bushel.—Oats nre in good request at Is lid to 2s, ex store, sacks extra. This xarket, in sympathy with the tone ruling in tho South, is very firm, and before the r.ew crop comes to hand we shall probably see higher rates ruling.—Hemp Since last writing the quantity reaching store has been exceptionally small, the bulk of the mills having shut down until the market shows a substantial improvement. Priccs are if anything a little firmer. We quote £14 5a to £14 10a for good flax ; fine, £15 to £15 ss.—Frozen Meat : Our head office cables from London as follows Quotations for mutton are unchanged since last cablegram. The beef market is firm. Fore and hindquarters are worth 3Jd 5o 4Jd respectively.
