AMERICA AND CHILI.
(BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH, —COPYRIGHT.) WASHINGTON, January 20. Tin-: despatch of an ultimatum to Chili, demanding the cancellation of the circular to the Chilian Legation in Europe, is confirmed. The British Minister at Santiago has offered to mediate. January 26. The ultimatum issued to Cnili by the United States Governnipnt does not make reference to any of the recent incidents which have taken place ill Valparaiso. It is simply a defence of Egan against the complaints made by the Chilian Government. In a message to Congress President Harrison declares that the United States' demands should be enforced, and they must protect the prestige and dignity of Government officials in foreign lands against insults and brutality. In New York the message has been received with complete indifference, and nobody believes war is possible between the two countries. The message lias been referred to the Foreign Committee. Stocks arc not affected. Valparaiso, January 26. The Chilian Government have withdrawn their request for the recall of the United States Minister. A circular issued by the Government requests tlip.fc the Eatimore dis-> pute bo referred to arbitration.
