THE TOTALISATOR TAX.
(BY TKLKGBAPH.—PUKSS ASSOCIATION.) DUXEDIN, LilSt Night. Mb Fish, M.H.R, sprang a mine on the meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club subscribers last night hy moving that it be an instruction to tho iiiciming committee that in the opinion of the meeting it is undesirable that the State Tux on the t»tilisat<T should be charged to the public. Hβ said that lie had heard that the Club intended to make the public pay 11£ per cent, in the future, and speaking as a Member of Parliament, he warned the committee that any attempt to saddle tho public with more than 10 ppr cent, would result in steps for tho abolition of the machine. The motion was seconded by Mr Meenan, the Club's Treasurer, who cave a decided opinion that 10 per cent, wnb sufficient to charge the public. Other members of the committee supported the motion so far as it related to the metropolitan clubs, but urged that country clubs should be left with a free hand. Tho proposal was carried unanimously with enthusiasm.
