Vegettbles of excellent quality were in good supply at auction, and fetched eatisI'a'jtory prices. Dairy produce : Supplies of fresh butter were large on Friday, and sold woll, prime, averaged 7d to one specially tine lino, 'J|<l ; seconds, od to 6d ; no inferior entered. Keg butter haa moved off more freely at tid to (Ud for firsts, and 5d for seconds. Cheese has been in more limited supply, whilst the demand is fair. Eggs of guaranteed quality realised lOd, whilst other sorts brought 7d average. The demand for poultry on Friday was fai beyond supplies. Fruit : The three sales during the week have been the means ol large quantities being quitted, and pricet with the exception of apples remain aboul as last week. In consequence of the large quantity if inferior apples arriving, prices generally are lower, and it is a matter ol considerable difficulty to quit anything bul really good quality. Red Astrachans at present top the market and have beer
more saleable than any other kinds for eating. Plums : Notwithstanding the bountiful crops, prices havo been maintained at an avcr.igo of 2jd to 2.W, whilst fancy sorts havo reached up to Grapes sold at a slight advance on last week's rates. Mr Albx. aitken's Market Report for the week ending January 10—Business, since my last report, has been very brisk ; the quantity of fruit and (produce received and sold has been larger than usual. In potatoes, the private demand for good samples has bet>n good, and about 40 tons have been disposed of at from £3 10s to £4 for Hobarts and kidneys, and 35s to 50s for Shepherds. The very dry weather is doing serious damage to crops, and at Friday's sale many lota were either in bad condition, small, or diseased ; these were sold at from Is lid to 3s per cwt., and Is to 2s per sinall bag ; cow potatoes, Is 2J to Is (id ; onions have been received in large quantities, and KoUl freely at, jd to Id per lb ; maize, all to hand realised 2s 3d ; wheat. Is 3d ; bran and sharps, 4s 9d ; butter, fresh, in limited supply and sold at 5d to Bd, according to quality ; keg butter in strong demand and fair supply at to 7d. Eggs have sold more freely ; guaranteed lots, Sd to 9.jd ; others, 3d to (id. Cheose has been in short supply, and sold as received. Prime whole cream, 3.U1 to 4d ; other lots, lid to 2d ; factory-made, 3.Jd to 4d : loaves, 4'|d to 3d. Bacon : Only tainted and damaged lots on hand, which is balance of a heavy stock on hand, for some time, and mostly damaged by bacon fly. This kind is difficult to move at Id to 3d, while a few fresh arrivals have sold at Gd to 7d ; hams, t; lto Sd. Honey : Section, 2s (id to 3*; bulk, 2d to 2:fd small tins, 2ifd to3Ad ; beeswax, !)d 11 9Ad. Poultry has been penned in iargo numbers, and lvalised high prices. Fowls : Good table, Is 8d to 2s 4d ; poor lots. Is 4d to Is GJ. Roosters in condition 2 s to 2s lid each ; others, Is 4d to Is lid each. Ducks, Is to 2s 2d each : geese, 2s to 3s 3d. Tin-keys : Heavy gobblers, 5s to 8s 3d ; light, 4s to 4s 3d ; liens, 2s 3d to 5s 9d, according to weight. Pigs wero penned in good numbers, with satisfactory domand; good young well-bred lots, 8s to 12s; large, 10* to 23s 6d: small and poor, including suckers, 4s to 6s 3d each. Fruit continues to como forward in large quantities, all commanding good prices, excepting apples. For this line there is no competition except where quality is extra fine, ordinary are not worth packing at present. This is due to the heavy crop of stone fruits, and the fact that three-fourths of the apples coming in are very badly affected by moth, f.nd not worth the cases, to the ruin of good brands. Ordinary and poor have sold at. .VI to gd, and Is to Is (id per enxfl; choice lines, all varieties, ; f 'd to l'.d. I Vara : Jargonelle, large and free fr-uu mot.li, 21 1m 2Y'l ; fairly good, I,'i'd; Wind nor, yd r.o lJ.d; (Jhissel pears, fid to Id. Plums : Diamond, 3|d to 4d ; Orleans, 2.V1 to 3d ; Karly Rivers, 2Jd to 2i/d ; greengage, 2Ad to o.Jd ; large red, 21d to oil: damsons, 2d to 2Ad.
