ANNUAL SCHOOL PICNIC AT TE RORE.
Among the old English customs which ar■•■ carried out in ttie B'imiuer season, numseem to !a<t so well, or to bo so genoralv popular among young and old, as the outdoor picnic, and nowhere is the cost >m more regularly observed than in Te Roiv. Mr D. McKiniion very kindly allowed t.he committee tie use of one of his paddocks, where the thirteenth annual picnic came off on Thursday last, and as tho d .y proved fine, there was the usual large attendance, numbering between 200 and 300 Gaines of all descriptions were entered into with great spirit by all. Races for toys and other prizes were got up for the children attending the school; in fact everything that could be thought of to make the youngsters happy was provided. A suuply of good things in the shape of tarts, cakes, &c, was forthcoming in the usual plentiful way, to which all hands did justice, and the whole affair passed off very successfully. Amongst the races run during the day, the Committee Race caused great excitement, as six started, all going out to win. The winner, however, turn dun in Mr Melville, the charman of the Te Row School Committee, who had somewhat the best of it ».t fiestait The Kgg and Spoon Rice for tho ladies a'so gave rise to a good d al of amusement, inn eggs getting-i rough time of it. R'lreshments were again handed round, and after .11 had been done ample justice to, the homeward course was tiken. Thanks are due to the committee, who wuked lu.rl t. make the affair so complete a success. The young people wound up their day's amuse ment with a dance, which took place in the school-room; but owing to the inclemency of the weather, the attendance was not so large as has hithert. been the case. Nev-r theless, some eighteen couples ventured out, and spent an enjoyable night, dance music being supplied by theTe Rore String Band.
