TE AWAMUTU MUSICAL SOCIETY

The Te Awamutu Musical Society-gave a performance of the sacred cantata " Christ and His Soldiers" last Wednesday evening in the Public Hall. There was a fair attendance of the local people, but except Alexpndra, I did not notice anyone from the other townships such as we usually have. The performers did not turn out as well as at the last concert, and several prominent faces were missing. The concert, taken right through, was very successful, and was deservedly appreciated. The piece abounds in choruses, which were very evenly rendered, and had a fine effect, although one or two showed a slight want of extra rehearsal. Of the soloists, Mr Burgess was in his usual good form, and acquitted himself grandly, especially in the song "In Taking That Thou Shalt Not Fear." Mr Fry had the tenor solos, and did them full justice. This gentleman is improving every time he appears in public. Mrs Burgess rendered the parts allotted to her very nicely, and the same may bo said of Mrs Andrews, but Mrs Long, owing to indisposition, was hardly as good as usual. Tho two debutantes, Misses Mandeno and Storey, created a very .avourable impression. Miss Mandeno was especially good, and surpassed the expectations of the most sanguine of her friends. A great part of the success of the concert was due to the skilful way Miss ' S. Mandeno rendered the various accom- ! paniments, those on the organ being a genuine treat.
