WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting was held in the County Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, when there were present: Crs. Primrose (chairman), Johnson, Barugh, Forrest, and Paton. Mr T. G. Sandes, the County engineer, was also in attendance. Suing for Ratks.—The Clerk reported that he had received no reply from Mr B. Hesketh, as to whether the Miranda Coal Company could be sued for two years' overdue rates.

Compensation.—The Taupiri Extended Coal Mine Company wrote, in reply to a demand for compensation for coal taken from under the Great South Road, that they admitted no liability.—li was resolved to ask the Company for the working plan of the mine. Native Burial Ground.—The Native Minister wired to know if the report were true that the fence had been taken up from around the Native burial ground at Taupiri, and that the remains had been exposed on the road.—The Engineer said the fence had been taken up, and thac on a slight cutting a skull had been exposed. This would have happened had a heavy rain come on. The bones had been at once buried. He said the tapu had long since been taken oil, and the Maoris had been putting their horses in the enclosure of late.

Coal Drive.—Permission was granted Messrs Ralph Bros, to make a drive under the main rond at Huntly, provided a royalty upon the coal bo taken out was paid. Thirds.—The amount to the credit nf the Council for thirds was reported as £80.

Road.—A reply was received from the Survey Office to the effect that the road running through lots 334, 335, 350 Whangamarino, was a road. The department also wrote saying that they would bear all reasonable cost if tbi Council would take proceedings to exchange roads in the Whangamarino district.

Dog Registrars.—The following dog registrars were appointed:—Hugh Fitzgerald, for Cambridge, Tamahere and Kirikiriroa; \V. Birss for Ohinowai; R. Lindsay, for Miranda and Wairangi, the remuneration to be Is per dog. Tenders are to be called for dog collars. Taniwha Road Contract.— A lengthy discussion ensued upon this contract, and it was reaslved that the Engineer be instructed to see that this work is carried out as per specification, within throe months.

Report.— Tha Engineer reported that the fencing along the Taupiri Gorge had been furnished, and that George Hill had nearly finished his contract on the road to Dilworth's.

Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—Travelling expenses, £210s ; Murch, 2s (id ; Lindsay, os ; Johansen, £1; Hill, £8 ; C. H. Smith, £12 17s.
