From reports received from the fanning district in New South Wales, .ve lsarii that the present season is in all re-.-pacts a s[ilandid one. Copious rains have fallen throughout the colony, consequently cro().s and pastures are looking well. This is the third good season in succession and judging li-otn the old records, a long dry period may be expected. During the present year "JO inches of rain have fallen, last year 18 inches, and tne year before over inches but in ISSS the rainfall was less than nine inches. It is with regret that we have to refer t-j several cases of pocket picking which occurred at the race meeting at Claudelands yesterday. A large number of thu light fingered gentry came up Irom Auckland on Thursday, one gentleman being relieved of his breast pin on the train journey up. We heard of two cases in which the victims were relieved of £12 and £10 respectively. In another case a gentleman found a strange hand in his pocket, but failed to secure the would be thief who made good his escape among the crowd. We hope the police will give these pentlemeu due attention and help them to obtain a free pass to Mount Kdeu.
Some curious examples of ntreiiked wool, the results of experiments nindw by Mr \V. A. Murray, of South Australia, with the object of Rettingu breed of lilaak sheop, are now to ho semi in Adelaide. The experiments were begun in 187U, aud in the Krst place Mr Murray selected black ewes fmni flocks of pure merinos, where .sheep of this colour were usually destroyed. It was not till 1SS!) that enoiiph ewes were secured. Mr Murray's other aim was to pet a ram with one more generation of black. In 1890, J9ense Darky was obtained, by the black ram Satan out of a black ewe; and this year a dozen lambs, quite black, except for it white stai have been secured from Dense Darky. List year the wool from this ram was perfectly bluck, but this year it has undergone it curious change, being black at the tip and streaked with grey and white further down. Several experts, to whom the wool has been submitted, say they have never seen anything similar to it.
