SOUTH AUCKL.-VXn ItACIXG CLUII'S SU.MMKIt .MKKTING. HRST DAY.
Thk opening day of the fifth ann-ial cathiiiing of this popular club was In/Id un the (Jlaiidolands Course ye«ti:tday, and was nuiiiiPlltly successful. The early moniini; broke cloudy, but before brnakfint the, sun shone out brightly and dispelled all f<-ars. Tho gathering was a. very good our, about SOO beii..' I'l'-s-.t iluring thn nflrnioon, and the grandstiind presentrd a vi-ry pretty scene, brightened by the seasonable drosses of thn many ladiea who attended. Among those present during thf- day were Mr Jackson Palmor, M. IF.lv. for Waitemati, Mr W. H. Herries Vice-President of the Club, and Mr K. I). Halstead handicapper. The stewards worked hard, and no exertions wnra spared by the honorary secrnt.-u-y. Mr (}. H. Carter, to make the meeting a success. The v.irions oHicers as under pei-forined their duties with every satisfaction. Not the slightest hitch occurred to mar tho day's enjoyment: Judge, Mr L. Cnsstsn ; starter, Mr.). McNicol ; clerk of sc:tlo9, Mr C. *» W. Buton ; clerks of course, Mossrs 0. V. and K. H. Pilling. The course was in good order, and the times registered were very fair, that for the Cup beiiiß the fa,<t -st yet recorded on the course for that distance. The win in this event w.i.-s a rery popular one, the owner, Mr McKinnon, receiving quite an ovation when his jockey returned to scale. Sca.lt heen's win in (ho Maiden Hurdles was also very popular with the public. The races towards the end got rather behind time owing t-> the Cup being delayed until the :urival of the train [run Auckland with McMiiinatnin, who was t> rid.? Ingorina. During the day there was no serious accident, the only inisliups which occurrpd the fall of Capellii in the Maiden Hurdles, and Sealtheonin the Steeples, but, in noithercase wero the jockeys or horses injured. The grandstand booth was provided over by Mr T. Biixtnn, of the lioyai Hotel, and with his attendants he was able to supply all the demands of his numerous customers. A substantial lnnchmn was provided by Mrs T. M. Hill in capital style at the grandstand, and at the refreshment booth Mr Mahon appeared to be doing a good business. Mr Home, who supplied ice creams at Mr AldionV. booth, did a very good trade, having sold out boforo the meeting was over. Three t italisatnrs were worked conjointly by Messrs Bloonifield and Co., and, with the exception of a mistake in the Steeplechase which was at once rectified, I think every satisfaction was given. During the day £1300 was put through, the tickets being 10s each, with the exception of the Cup, in which event they were £1. The bast dividend was in tho Cup, tho amount being £6 Bs. A number of bookmakers plied their vocation, but they complained that business was not very brisk with them. Tho Hamilton Brass Band, under Bandmaster Mettam, played a number of .selections on t'ne nutar stind during tho day ; but there wore some complaints Hut it was tou near to be duly appreciated by tho occupants of the grand stand. A Mr.ro and efficient posse of pohco were piv.-sent, but their services were not required to any vory great extent.
The racing during the day was very good, although the fields in some iubtuncej were not as large as might lias.; been expected from the entries. Seven events were set clown for decision, the first being the Maiden in which a field "f six faced the stutter, Vieux Rise who went t:i the front at once had very little to do to dispose of her Held in this, winning easily. For the Maiden littrdles only three went: to the post, Scaltlieen proving the winner, Capeila who was close up falling at the last hurdle. Six wont out in the Cup anduftur n splendid , a .;e J JU oh Nuss (.'.lined the judge's vorrtict by abnit a neck. Tiie Stieples proved rather uninteresting, as out of the three starters Justio was left, to finish alone. I'infire was served np :i hot favourite for the Tradesmen's I'late und he justified the confidence placed it: him by beating a. field of thtve others ea.sily. The biggest field was in the Novel Ilnce when uine faced the H.ig and again the Hvourite, Mistake secured the judge's verdict. Iti the last race of the day, the Flying Stakes, the favourite was again successful, Ingorina securing the premier position in a field of eight The fallowing is a detailed account uf the racing :— Maiden Place Handicap, of HOsovs. For horses (of any description) that have never won an advertised race of moro than £25 at time 'jf entry. These two led round into the straight, when the whip was brought out on Ma lioughal, but he could not catch the mare, who won as she liked by a length, nover being pressed. On the card for to-day, eight events are set down, and no do-.ibt the one on which most interest will settle will be the Waikato Produce Stakes, which will be the first race of this description run in the district. Five have paid up the final forfeit, and as it is expectpd they will all uomu to the post, an interesting race may therefore bo anticipated. The handicaps appear to have given general satisfaction, and although so few names appear for some of the event*, this is explained easily, as since the nominations were received, n<> less then nine of the horses have sustained such injuries as to prevent their runniiie. I have ventured on a few tips as follows :—
Waikato Produce Stakes: Secret, 1, E.Q.V., 2, Lottie, 3. Steeples : JuKtice, 1, Culonel 2, Scultlieen, 3. Handicap Hurdles: Capella. or Tciminy, 1, Barshnt, 2, Yardman, 3.
