DEATH OF SIR FREDERICK WHITAKER, K.C.M.G.
(by telegraph -own correspondent.) Auckland, Last Night. Sir Frederick Whitaker was seized with a fatal illness at his office this afternoon. Alessrs Buddie and Mason had occasion to go to Sir Frederick Whitaker's room about three o'clock, when they found that gentleman sitting in his chair, unconscious. LY Haines was called in, and ordered the patient's immediate removal. He died half-an-honr after arrival at his house. Sir Frederick had a paralytic stroke some time ago, and his death was doubtless due to a second seizure of n similar character.
Sir Frederick Whitaker was one of tho early settlers of tho colony, having arrived in Auckland in 1811. He has always taken an active interest in the political welfare of New Zealand, at one time representing the constituency of Waikato, and later on being called to the Upper House. Ho was a member of several Ministries usually filling the portfolio of Attorney-General, which position he filled in the late Atkinson Government.
The deceased gentleman who was the senior member of the firm of Messrs Whitaker, Russell and Buddell had been failing for some time past and his sudden demise yesterday was not altogether unexpected He leaves a grown up family of four sons and four daughters to mourn his loss, Lady Whitaker having died some years ago.
