The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

THURSDAY, DEC. 3, 1891.

Equal and exact lusttce to all men, Qt whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political.

Tiik raeeting of settlers at Ohaupo on Tuesday last, to consider the question of holding an Agricultural Show in Waikato next year, was in every way a satisfactory one. There was a large and representative attendance from all parts of the district, and perfect unanimity prevailed. The wretched spirit of localism which has in time past interfered j so largely with the material progress of Waikato was happily absent. A nyslight allusions of a local nature were received with marked disapproval, and everyone present seemed determined to regard the matter from a broad and liberal standpoint, in that it was a question of more than usual importance to the district. This in itself is a most favourable feature in the inauguration of the coming show, In the selection of a site. we believe, a judicious choice was made, in deciding upon the Claudelandsßacecourse. Twothings are obviously necessary to be borne in mind in determining the place for holding an agricultural show. These are: Securing the largest possible attendance, and offering the greatest facilities for bringing and returning exhibits to and from the show. The central position of the Racecourse, and the ready means of access to it both by rail and road, renders Claudelands in every way suitable for securing these objects. This the meeting fully recognised, and no other place was suggested as being more suitable in these respects. The farmers, we are convinced, are thoroughly in earnest on this important matter of an agricultural show. The attendance at Ohaupo on Tuesday and the real interest manifested by all present in the proposals made were cheering indications of the co-operation which will be afforded from all parts of the district. With a united effort from all parts of Waikato, we have no doubt that the show will be a credit to the district and to the settlers themselves. Of the advantages to be derived from an agricultural show, botli directly and indirectly it is hardly necesyary for us to speak. As an advertising medium for all kinds of stock, and agricultural produce, nothing can equal a properly conducted agricultural show. A large attendance of the public is obtained, and the best capabilities are presented to public inspection. Fresh openings for stock and produce are thus secured, and probably additional farmers and settlers of all classes are attracted to the district. A show is also a most valuable stimulator and educator. A spirit of honourable rivalry amongst stock breeders is a moot dcsiiablo ouo to foster and

There is also a great deal to bo learned, in looking at an animal typical of its broed and class and listening to the opinions of ugriculturiuts of oxpoi'iuuce and niaturo judgment. Wo most cordially wish this undertaking overy possible success. Wo have no doubt, as we liavo already said on this point—all that is required, is for the whole body cf the settlers to go on as they have begun and work heartily and cordially together and the success of of the proposed agricultural show is assured.
