CENTRAL RAILWAY LEAGUE.

POLICE COURT, NGARUAWAHIA

(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Last Night. A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a Central Railway Leaguo was held yesterday. Mr J. B. Harcourt, who presided, spoke of the endeavours that were being made to have, the route of the North Island Trunk Railway diverted to Taranaki, snyine be did not think the interests of Xew Zealand should be sacrificed to local jealousy. Large lilocks of land could be opened up by adoptinc the central route, whilo if the Taranaki line was adopted, they would have to compete aeainst the steamship companies. Dr Newman, M.H.R., (convenor of the meeting) moved : "That in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable to form a. Central Railway League, to vigorously p-osecute the North Island Main Trunk Railway from Marton to Te Awamutu, and such League is hereby established." Speaking to the motion he said it had long been decided that the railway should go through the centre of tho Island, but the Auckland people had now taken it into their he-ids to get up an agitation against it. The resolution was carried, and a strong committee electod to manage the businoss of the League. _________

Annie Emeuy v. Mahy Gii.lky.— Mahy Gili.ky v. Annik Em kisy.—These were charges 2nd countercharges 'if !>s''au!t and abusive language, on 13th October last. Mr Hay appeared for Mrs Kmoiy and Mr Dyer for Mrs Gilley. Thu evidence was very oonllicling, Mis Emery and her husband stating th:«t Mrs Gillov h-'d thrown a basin at her, and that she (.Mrs lvnery) had not in any way interfered with Mrs (lilloy. Mrs Gilley on the other hand described the assault which Mrs Emery had committed mi her. and which was one of considerable violence. In this she was coroborated by thu evidence of her daughter and a witness named William Paddy, who had seen Mrs Gilley with a damaged face after the alfray. Mrs Gilley still had the remains of a black eve, and some hair (produced in Court) which was alleged to have been pulled from her head, bore evidence of the nature of the assault. The bench after consultation found the cburge of assault against Mrs Emery proved, and fined her 10s and £2 costs. The other informations were dismissed.
