V.R.C. SPJRIXG MEETING. TfiK first day'fl races of tlm above meeting takes place on tho Fleniiiißtun course today. The chief events to be decided this afternoon are tho V.R.C. Darby, Melbourne Stakes and Maribynong Plate. An extra will be issued by us this evening. TIPS BY " KAVONIUS." Not knowing what is likely to start for tho Maribynong Plate, I can only give your readers the names of those horses that I think from their breeding might supply the winner. They are :— Nobody, Tho Shruw, Halm, Moimiay and Gladys. The Derby I think will be won by either Penance or Sternchaser.

For the Melbourno Stakes I fancy liungC' bah and Marvel.

For the Cup I select Correze, Greygown, and Megaphone.

TIPS BY ' - MAKTINGALE." To-day will witness the rise nf the curtain on the first of the important spring gatherings, the scene of operations being Flomington. The principal ovout of the day is the V.R.C. Derby, in which several Now Zealand-bred horses are taking part. For this event I will take Stiomboli, jjtratlinviro and Oxide, in the order named. On Tuesday next the big event of the vear dimes up for decision—the Melbournn Cup—for which event thirty-seven horses have accepted. The race is robbed of a good deal of interest, owing to the absence of Carbine, Melns and Vengeance, but nevertheless a good race maybe expected. This event, I think, will lie between Cnrreze, Megaphone, Sir William and Highborn, and to pick out one I shall gn for Correze.

(»T TELBGBAPH.—OWN COBUESPONDEST). Auckland, Last Night.

Hippoua in to night's Star hns the following :—To-morrow the V.R.C. Derby comes up for decision at Flemington. Mr \V. K. Wilsou supplies the favourite for the event in tho Auckland bred colt Stratliuioro, aud everything points to the fact that ho will bo hard to beat. Public form and the betting market favour the idea that Oxide will be Strathmore's most dangerous opponent. If Mr Wilson's colt proves triumphant there will he no end of satisfaction in Auckland for he was bred at the Wellington Park Stud. The other items of tomorrow's programme surrounded with most interest are the iMaiibyrnong Plate and Melbourne Stakes. If Marvel is started he should win the last named event.
