RETAIL COMMERCIAL
TRAVELLERS. TO THK EDITOR. SlB, —In Tuesday's issue " O dooker " calls attention to a matter that is certainly worthy of consideration ; and on Thursday "Another On-looker " joined issue, taking the side of the retail commercial. The laffpr's letter contained an insinuation that " Oil-looker" is a Cambridge storekeeper ; that I an not- prepned lo deny, neither am t aware of any of composition exhibited in " On-looker's" letter that should for?e " Another On-looker " to arrive at that conclusion, indeed I think the former letter compares favourably with the latter as far ; 'S c »mpomlii u if concerned. As 1 have a little to say on this subject I may as well state, for "Another Onlooker's information, th tlam no ped <nt, so he is welcome to find f tu!l with my c onmUher ami in anv way c m nectcd with dither of tho Camhudge storekeepers further than occasionally pnr chasing good* from ' hem, so I •dc 'S a disinterested p iriy. ITnui £ rend Tussday 1 -- piperlwasnot aw.uvi there were so m»ny of these hawkers, huckster-:, higglers, o> whatever their pr »por name i*, spoil ing Waikato, and I think it is not to iho is of the residents of the di*tric', for if th"-»' wanderers did not do goo \ trade, th>*ir number would lessen of increase, as apparency has been the case. Froir wlni £ cm leant the storekeepers take irmLt oi the farmer's produce, b»r gr.iin and wool, and if that is the case 1 think the settlers should havo a little fell w feeling and make their purchases at the stores when* they dispose of their butter, eggs, etc, instead of supporting tallymen who do not leave a " red cent "iu the district. I agree with u On-looker " and think a heavy license fee should be charged ; for though the term " retail commercial traveller" sounds better than 14 hawker," yet it amounts to the sain-' thing. I should very much like to know if "hawkers " have to pay a licence ten in tin Cambridge borough ; also if "retail commercial Travellers " have ever paid the fee ; i.e., it tho Borough by-laws provide for one being charged.—Yours, etc., ANH-Taliyman.
