RETAIL COMMERCIALS. TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—ln Tuesday's istuo of the Times I rend a letter from " On-Lonlter," ro retail commercials.'' From the enmpositinn, I ain forced to conclude that On-Lnnker " is one of thf. trudtt residing nut 100 miles from Cambridge, and is rather annoyed because the residents of the Waikato have at last kicked at the outrageous prices oharged hy some of the local tradesmen. " On-lnoker," states that the retail commercial ha 3 to p:iy a feo »f £5 every time he enters a northern district. I believe the only place where a fee is charged is Russell, and that £."> per year. Nevertheless the residents there send to Auckland for thoir drapery, and although no travellers canvass the district, it does not prevent samples being sent by post, and the result is large orders. If "On-Lonker " would come down to suit the times and be content with «mall profits he might have less to complain of, —Yours. &c., Another Ox-Looker. A FABLE. A CAPITAL JOKE FOR WORKING MKN. There is one of fables I remember when a lad, Of "The Belly ana the Members " And the quarrel that they had. The members all rebelled and s.iid They would not toil alone To pamper and to bolster up A glutton and a drone. The hands refused to handle tools, The legs declined to walk, The jaws no longer chewed the food, The tonguo would only talk. They kept their promise, till at last, The body grew so thin, The flesh all wasted ; nought was left But just the bunes and skin. The members starved till thoy at last Began to comprehend, The Belly was their just ally, Their best and truest friend. At length, when both got reconciled, The Belly throve; and that Gave strength to every member, And they all grew monstrous fat I wnnder if our workmen will To see the drift tie able, And lenrn the lesson that is taught In /Esop's simple fable.
