(LIV TKUIGIt.U'II.— OWN CORKKSPONIIKNT.) Auckland, Last Night, Tins Mangere Farmers Club had a long debate with the Single-tux champions which resulted in a vote adverse tu Henry George's views.
The charge of illicit distillation against Downing was dismissed, the Magistrate holding that thete was no evidence that the plant was used for distilling. General Booth's (who arrived yesterday) meetings were crowded. Bishop Cowie and a deputation of the Ministers Assosiation called and Paid their respects.
Mr Cadman has wired to Mr T. Thompson promising tho details of the Stratford route railway. The following telegram has been sent by Mr Shera to the Minister for Public Works A Railway League has been formed here non-pelitically. There is intense feeling 111 favour of the Stratford route, and we want to know if you will postpone the contract for the Mokahinn viaduct till the League has ventilated the matter, and also heard an expression of opinion by tho northern members." No reply has yet been received.
The following have been appointed Inspection Assessors under the Land and Income Tax Assessment Act passed last session : T. Cabutt and W. C. Walker, Otago ; 0. 1). Kennedy, Hawke's Bay; K. A. Campbell, West Coast of the North Island. None as yet have been appointed for Auckland. It is not compulsory to make appointments by the Act, but it was thought that a better assessment would be secured by having men with local knowledge to confer with. It is not intended to appoint assessors for boroughs. The abovenamed will hold their first meeting at the Property-tax ottioe this week.
