HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
+ THB usual monthly meeting of tho above council was held in the Council Chambers at 730 o'clock on Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor, (Mr Isaac Coates), in the chair, and Crs Bell, Parr, Scott, Wood and Reid. New Councillors.—The Returning Officer reported that at the election for three councillors, Messrs R. F. Sandes, H. M. Salmon, andC. Tippen were duly returned. The first two gentlemen being present signed the usual declaration and took their seats. Endowmbnt.— The Department of, Lands and Survey wrote, stating that a warrant was published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 3rd September, vesting sections Nos. 43, 44, and 4. r >, Township of Hamilton West, in the Borough of Hamilton as an endowment in aid of the borough funds. Work.—E. Wall wrote asking for some work in the borough to enable him to pay his rates. Owing to his rates not being paid he had not had a vote for three years.— Received. Rates.— The Lady Prioress of St. Mary's Monastery, Hamilton, wrote drawing attention to the increase of the rates on the convent buildings, and said that she felt it very exacting to pay rates, especially as the building was a public school. —The valuer said that in reality there was a reduction on Mr Gaudin's valuation, but as a new school building had been erected the valuation had been raised £s.—Or. Scott said that the rates were remitted on the Salvation Army premises, and he thought they should be remitted in this case. —Cr. Salmon moved, "That the rates on the convent schools be remitted for this year." He said that he moved this as the Sisters of Mercy were doing a good work in Hamilton.—The Clerk read the clause in the Rating Act bearing on the remission of rates and his Worship said that in the face of this he could not see his way to do any thing in this matter for this year.—Cr. Salmon's motion not being seconded it lapsed.—Cr. Parr moved, "That as the Council have not power to remit anything this year it be an instruction to the valuer next year to reduce the valuation to about one half, but it was pointed out that the valuer being an independent officer.the council could not give any instructions to him.— This motion also lapsed.—The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the Rev. Mother stating that as tho proper time was past the Council cannot now make auy reduction for this year. BATHS.—Mr J. Hintou applied for the appointment of caretaker for the Hamilton West baths at a charge of Id per head admission. It was proposed byCr. Salmon " That Mr Hinton be appointed caretaker —Seconded by Cr. Sandes and carried. Repouts.—The foreman of works reported that during the month various works had been done in different parts of the borough, and that the road to the Hamilton West Cemetery, tho road from Mr Manro's hill to Mr Scott's, and the road from Bradley's bridge to the flax mill requires reforming,—Tho report was received and adopted, the work to be carried out as funds admit.—The dog registrar reported that since tho last meeting he had registered two dogs. He stated that Mr Stougie had a dog which he refused to register, and he referred the mutter to the Council for them to take what action they thought necessary.—Cr. Salmon moved "That the matter be left in the hands of the Clerk,with power to act"'—Seconded by Cr. lleid and carried, Cr. Wood nloiio dissenting,—No report was received from the potmdkeeper. Accounts. —Payment <>f tho following accounts was authorised : 11. i'\ Sandes, (is ; G. Mayes, t'HOs; J. Wright, £310*; J. Parr 1U Id ; Manktelow, 3«. Commiitkks.—The various committees for the ensuing year were constituted as follows :—Works : The whole council. Legal : Crs. Sandes, Parr, and Scott. Finance : The Mayor and Crs Bell and Ivid. Endowment -.—The Mayor and Crs. S.dmon, Tippen and Wood. Band SuiiKrv.—The Clerk drew the attention of the Council to the fact that one of the sureties for the band instruments had left the district,and the clerk was instructed to call the secretary's attention to this, and ask him to submit another surety at next meeting. Lots 43, 44 and 45.—Cr. Parr moved "That the furze on thes? lots he cleared under the supervision of the Foreman of Works, the work to be proceeded with at , once."—Seconded by Cr. Iteid and carried. '< Fiuk. —Cr. Salmon said he thought some ovision should be made in the main treets, especially on the West side, for getting a supply of water in case of fire. A well might be sunk near the .Jubilee i Garden, or the street adjoining the Hamil- I ton Hotel. Several other councillors spoke j on this subject, which was deferred to a j future occasion. , This was all the business.
