FREIGHT CHARGES ON FRUIT.
It will be recollecled that recently the question of the freight charges on fruit, shipped from Auckland to the English markets, was under the consideration of the Ohamber of Commerce, and it was resolved to make representations to the shipping companies on the subject of obtaining a reduction of the charges as well as providing suitable cool chambers, etc., for the fruit, and payment of freights in London. Tha chairman of the Auckland Chamber of 1 Commerce lias received the following reply from the secretary of tbo New Zealand Shipping Company, dated Christchurch, October 5, 18K1, by which it will be seen that soiii" important concessions have been made, which will, no doubt, be taken advantage of by our Northern fruitgrowers, although the company cannot see their w.iv to accept payment in London :—" Sir, —I h'tvi* the honour to acknowledge receipt; of your letter of tho 25th ultimo, which was submitted to a conference of the representatives of the two shipping companies, held on tho 2nd instant. It has been decided to fix the rate of freight on fruit to London at 4s per case of two feet, with usual primage freight, to be paid in exchange for bills of lading at port of shipment. We were to some extent guided by the freights ruling from Tasmania in fixing tho rjto abovementioned —the rate fr.nn that colony being 4s Gd per case. We trust the reduction of (id per caso will meet the wishes of fruit exporters. We regret that, owing to tha perishable nature of fruit, wo do not see ouj tvay to accept payment of freight in London. If possible we will tnake Auckland the final port of departure in February and March."
