AUCKLAND TOBACCO.
Thanks to tlio business knnwledfro and organising talent of Mr Austin Walsh, of Messrs Austin Walsh and Co., this prosperous industry has been bruiißht to its present state of efficioncv. Howovor, had it not boon for Mr Walsh's tact and address as a lobbier, the Government would have made an end of this enterprise, with their precious Customs and excise restrictions. At first one of the ablest supporters in the T/ißHlnti.-u Council of the nbjectional clauses was the Hun. Dr. M. Grace, but Mr Walsh happily succeeded in convincing; him that certain clauses in the Hill would stop the manufacture of New Zealand tobacco, and Dr. Grace ceased his powerful advocacy of these clauses, and they were amended. Messrs Austin Walsh and Co. have the most excellent uniquo and suitable machinery for the manufacture of the finest brands of tobacco, cigars and snuff, and they employ a very large number of hands, of both sexes. We have seen the tobacco in the leaf as received by the firm locally grown and foreign and then in its manufactured state, either as tobacco, cigars, cigarettes or snulf, and we firmly believe the samples of these articles would compare favourably with thoso of either Cuba or Virginia. As this is the planting season, and as the firm are prepared to purchase an unlimited quantity of leaf, we would recommend our readers to send to their, for a parcel of aeed, and their able brochure on tobacco culture in New Zealand, and bo strictly guided by the latter. We hope to see tobacco more extensively cultivated in Waikatu during this and future years.
