Ik this issue an advertisement appears recommending the claims of .Mr U'. A. Murray to the electors of Waikato. It will he apparent to most people that, although it bears no signature, it emanates from the Great Liberal Party, who, until midclay on .Monday last, were, in the words of their chief exponent, not inclined to cast their votes in favour of a hybrid —such was their definition of an Independent member. Boou afcer 110011 on .Monday a chauge cuiuo over phe scene. Iho timo for the nomination qf candidates was past, and the ftcroni.incnt had made no move to put forward a distinct supporter of their own. Of tlio two eandidatos £oiprinated, ono lias declared himHtrf for the Opposition;

the other was on tho rail. In tho ease of the latter, there was a chance of conversion. Wo do uat wish to infer that Mr Murray had been coquetting with tho Government, but upon oilier matters, evou quite recently, according to statements in his own speeches, ho has been in communication with them; and indeed it would appear from what Mr Murray says of himself, that lit! has been acting as a sort of dry nurse, not only to individual politicians, but to many successive administrations as well, and tho opportunity afforded by the present occasion has been apparently too favourable to be over-looked in carrying on this role. It is needless to discuss the question further from this aspect. So far as tho party before alluded to is concerned, unusual activity was observable on Monday after tho nomination, culminating—if we may bo allowed to read between tho lines of their electioneering address—in their consenting to accept Mr Murray as tho chosen one, at tho instance, wo have good grounds for stating, of advice askod for aud tendered from headquarters in Wellington. It will be a very decided relief to many electors that the political position is now defined. They have now a distinct issue to go to the poll upon. We have in the field Mr Lake, an avowed oppositionist, aud Mr Murray, to all intents and purposes, a Ministerialist, though undeclared. Let the electors of Waikato realise this and act accordiuirl v.
