She Waikato times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE. Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political. SATURDAY, SEPT 5, 1891.

Tx another part of this issue will bo I'littud tlui furcwHl address of tho Hon. John Bryco to the electors of Waikiito. The address speaks eloquently for the high sense of honour and sensitive nature of its author. It is not difficult, after reading the address, to discover the motives which prompted Mr Bryce to resign his seat. Ho felt convinced that he had done nothiiis unparliamentary or improper, unci that any expressions he luiyht hiivo used were, to quote his own worrN, -well within the ordinary usages of Parliament try debate. The House, however, censured him for the 111 inner in which he referred to the Premier, and refused to rescind the resolution when invited to do so. Mr Bryce says he felt that a cruel indignity and injustice had been placed upon him, and which reflected through him upon the Waikato electorate. He felt it his duty to protest in the strongest manner in his power against such treatment, and as sin emphatic denunciation of such conduct tendered the resignation of his seat. Although opinions may differ as to the wisdom ini expediency of the step taken by Mr Bryce, none can fail to respect tho motive which prompted it. Mr Brycc held a particularly strong position in tho House. He had been requested to stund for a dist-ict whore he was comparatively a stranger. He had been returned twice unopposed for that district and sit the time of his resignation was the leader of his party. On a change of Ministry he would naturally hive been Premier and owing to his past servioes to the colony with the honour of knighthood probably added. Ho was nssured of the unswerving loyalty of his party and lie \vsi3 strongly urged by his constituents not to resign. All this however is thrown aside. He feels that he is vindicating his own honour and that of his constituency, and at whatever cost, ho does not hesitate to carry his convictions into effect. From tho honourable position he occupied, with all its promise of future advancement, he retires by his own act into tho

qn'wl life, of the conn try. Who can tail to i'.dmire th'j disinterestedness of his conduct, and who can ovcr-usti-niiiti' the s.-icrifiji! which h;is been made foi , c-.Misi-ii-iico siikc'r . We question very much wheth-r imy oilier mßin'ricr in tin- llousu would iK.t pro puivd to do tho siimi'. Men of high and lofty principle Itico John liryct; :mc fiiw mid l'.ir between. We Ciinnot think. as \vi! said on :i former ocoasioJi, thiit the services of Mr Bryce urn lost to the colony for over. Wo belii've thiit the better judgment of members will rise dominant over piu'i.y jealousies, iind Uvtt the indignity olFcred to the late member for Waikiito will be removed as unworthy of ii place on the records of the House. When this occurs Mr Bryce will be again brought forth from his retireincut to fulfil, we doubt it not, some important and valuablo service to his country.
