The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE. Equal and exact justice to all men. Of whatsoever state or perseasion, religious or political. TUESDAY, SEPT 1, 1891.
When* it became apparent that Mr Bryce was firm in his determination to resout tho affront put upon him by the Tlouse on Thursday last his constituents from all parts of Waiknto sent telegrams expressing their sympathy with him and urging upon him tho importance of standing to his post at the present critical period of the colony's affairs. We very much regret that Mr Bryce has not seen his way to accede to these urgent appeals, for of all men in the Huuso, Mr Bryce could best afford to treat with the most utter contempt the indignity that was attempted to be put upon him. In another portion of this issue the full text of these expressions of confidence will be found. Mr Bryce it will be seen has replied in effect that in his opinion his expression of censure upon the Premier was justified and not unparliamentary and that his protest vindicated the honour of his constituents, his country, and his own. A later telegram announces the fact that his farewell address to his constituents has beon posted and that throughout he has been guided by a sense of duty. His decision will be received with general regret throughout the length and breadth of the colony. With a man o£ Mr Bryce's temperament it is to be feared that this untoward event will close the political life of one of the most able statesmen the colony has yet produced.
