[BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT.! Auckland, Last Night. At tho opening of the Supreme Court Criminal Sessions to-day, His Honour charging tha grand jury said, " I regret to have to inform yon that there are a very large number of cases which will be brought before you by indictment, no less, I believe, than forty-two indictments involving charges against thirty prisoners. There are not any charges of a very grievous class of offence, none involving loss of life; many yon will find to be very simple, but others will be found to take a little time and I have no doubt you will give them careful consideration." His Honour then proceeded to refer to the nature of the various charges. John Wilson waß sentenced to three years for stealing an alt-ir cloth from St. Patrick's CatUodral. Thomas Meikle Ford alias John Williams, pleaded guilty to two charges of forgery and uttering, and also forging an endorsement to a valueless cheque. His Honour said it was sad to see a youth nineteen years of age robbing two masters in succession, and sentenced him to two years' hard labour. Geo. Walkinshaw pleaded guilty to forcing and uttering a cheque on the 20th June last. He was senteneed to three years' penal servitude. George Mulholland, who was arraigned upon an indictment charged with malicious injury to certain property on the 2(ith June last, the property of Julia Wilson, was found guilty and sentence deferred. J. W. Kennedy pleaded guilty to five charges of forgery, and was sentenced to four years' on each charge, tho sentences to run concurrently. Percy Henry Ellis, alius 0. Cowan, was charged with forgery and uttering certain cheques, there beine seven different charges against him. The prisoner pleaded guilty, and MrO'Meaeher, who appeared for him, stated that he was a mere youth, beine only nineteen years of age, and, as the offences were all committed within one week, he asked His Honor to deal with the prisoner under the First Offenders Probation Act. He was sentenced to 12 months' on each otfence, to run concurrently.
