Thkkk has been a sharp decline in the stock of the Bank of South Australia, which is due to sales by several nervous holders, who were alarmed at recent Melbourne failures. The directors of the bank have issued a circular, in which they state the position of the institution is not affected, and that they are ignorant of anything to justify the depreciation in the value of stock. They also issert that the earnings uf the past half-year have been fully maintained. Mr Perkins read a paper at the British Association's meeting on the relations between labour and capital. He proposed that after a sum had been allocated . for the redemption of capital and the I payment of interest further profits should be divided in proportion to the working capital and the gross sum of the annual wages paid by an employer. The British Association for the Advancement of Science proposed to establish an observatory in Central Africa. The Times publishes a review of the positiou in New Zealand, four columns in length, in which a most favourable view is taken of the prospects of the colony. The articlc states that the bloodless conquest of the Maoris was the chief object of the public works and immigration policy. The authorship is attributed to Sir Julius Vogel. Lisbo.v, August 22. The financial crisis in Portugal is increasing. There is no gold, and both silver aud copper are scarce. Rome, August 22. The Italian Government is moving in the direction of securing the release "of the railway inspector kidnapped by brigands. Calcutta, August 22. The Marquis of Lansdo.vne, the Viceroy of India, is selecting a native ruler for Manipur. Constantinople, August 22. Information has been received that a number of Turkish soldiers were profaning a Christian Church at Assigonia, when the Greek civilians turned on them, and after killing three fled to the mountains. The brigands demand a ransom of £2000 for the Italian inspector captured near Salonica, otherwise he will be put to death. Paris, August 21. Further information confirms the news of the great destruction to property and losa of life by the hurricane at Martinique, a French colony in the West Indies. Two hundred and eighty people were killed and 200 injured by falling trees, &c. The devastation is fearful. St. Petersburg, August 21. The Orthodox Conference of Russia recommends the severest repression of Protestants, and urges that they should be made ineligible to purchase or rent land or to fill civic offices.
