ALEXANDRA.

Our Libiuiiy.—Of late days our library has sadly fallen into neglect, some six members only subscribing, so that the attendance of tho librarian, Miss Harper, must have been for some time pasta labour of love. This should not be, with a large, •well-built building and some hundreds of books on the shelves. So think our present committee, lately elected, with some new blood, who aro determined, if possible, that tlio library shall bo kept opened by more subscribers being induced to join. To oltect thin, they have determined to hold regular periodical social nicotines for mutual entertainment, at a nominal charge, the meetings to be hold in tho library itself so as to save expenses. The first of these meetings took place on Friday evening last, and was a complete success, the building being entirely filled by our towns folks. Mr Walter .Tames, one of the now committee, was voted to the chair, and in a few well chosen words explained the object in view, in which the committee saw, from the number present, every hope of future success to the Alexandra Library. Ho also took the opportunity of thanking a visitor present Mr U. Cruickshank, from Te Awamutn, who had kindly come there that evening to assist tham, although almost a stranger to the district. A very pleasant evening was thon spent, no regular programme being prepared. Amongst the most prominent items was a pianoforto'dnet by the Misses Bowden. chorus by the school children, song by Miss Allan, encored, respond, " Coming Thro' the Kyo song, Mr Eugene Aubin, encored ; song. Miss Blanche Finch ; reading, by Mr Cruickshank, "King Robert II." This item was most feelingly read, but something of a lighter character would have been more appreciated by many present. A duet, piano and violin, by Miss Allen and Mr E. Aubin was well received; song, by Mr Carnforth, "The Seven Ages of Man," (comic), took immensely, and '"The Broken Hearted tlardenor," given in responso to an undeniable oncore, was equally successful. A reading by tho chairman, "The Wreck of tho Orpheus," waa well received, 11.1 also was a comic song by Mr E. Aubin, who accompanied himself. A charade in which Misses Allen and Finch, Mr Aubin, and others took part, finished as agreeable an entertainment as lias been held hero for soma time past. To Mrs Aubin, Miss Allen, Mr E. Aubin and the chairman, Mr James, the thanks of the committee are due for the great .success of the first social meeting. Refreshments of tirsi -class quality, with hot tea and colfeo were libernlly distributed throughout the evening, and were thoroughly enjoyed. The night being a cold one, a danco followed, to which a good number rernainsd.
