NEW ZEALAND PRODUCEIN ENGLAND.
AN EXPERT'S OPINION. TO THK KDITOII. Sat. — Messrs H. Reynold* and Co. «f your district iind at Auckland, hnvintr appointed mo tlifir agent in Birmingham fur tho sale of their butter direct to the consmnev, ft a lino or two your valuable columns jnny bu not withuut interest to your numerous reader*engaged indairying pursuits, <nd ns this business is an wida and continually oxpmding, it is a subject worthy all attention hy yemr New Zealand farmers. In fact I cmiiot too strongly impress upon the minds of all interested that thero is in front of them a vast trade, by which all concerned may bo largely benefited and British (Join finds its way much more freely into the hands of our own colonists and count"yinen, not in the shape of loans to be rw>aid at heavy interest, but cash for goods •old, and by which even your working popuj lation may bonefit as well as tha large estate fariuors, and the question arises why need wo continue to pay aa we have hitherto done, such enormously large sums annually to tho French, the Dane, the Swede, the German, Dutch, American, and even autocratic .Russia, while Now Zealand possesses far and away superior capabilities of producing that which we are urgently in need of —good, pare, sweet, unadulterated Bust Butter. Let that be tho motto and Htandard quality maintained and all is well. \Ve have the markets, we have tho money, we can better afford to pay you the high price than the foreigner who taxes ua for anything we supply him with and if your farmers proporly realize the situation, their imrnodiate determination would be to sea that New Zealand held her own, in the matter of aupplioa to tho almost omnivoioia Did, Country. Supplies we must have, yours is the chance to make the most of our actual needs, the open market gives th» price. Mesßrs Reynolds and Co. and their confreres deserve tho most hearty moral and material support, not only of those ot whom they diroctly buy their supplies, but from the whole dairying community, for I boar in mind a letter which appeared iu your columns of mime twelve months back in which their then proposed journey to b!ie old country was strongly condemned, but tho results I think are conclusively otherwise and must havo convinced the firm that, properly h.indled and without the frequently too heavy percentages of the London commiesi m brokers there is a business to bo done at satisfactory prices. That this is so seems to be confirmed by the progress of the frozen meat trade—your own paper I beliove I road it in, that, Nelson Brothers (Limited), New Zealand, again to the foro are able to order from Denny Bros., (Limited), of Dumbarton, a HOOO-ton boat to carry 70,000 carcases per journey and why not in the near future similar consignments of butter and cheese. Another good line too for your New Zealand farmer and horticulturist is the apple trade the enormous quantities of Tasmanian apples, just recently selling in London haa been a perfect furo're. Arriving here just the American supplies closed for the seanoil, and when only early Rhubarb is on olfar, they have had a splendid run, but your fruit ripening under a cooler clime should and will be undoubtedly perferable, some cases of specimens I received from Messrs Reynolds as a trial lot arrived in splendid condition, firm crisp and juicy, as if only freshly gathered, Such fruit will command large and ready sale at fairly remunerative prices, a good appearance as well as the necessary keeping properties, bein? a material aid in the sale. Fearing I hive drawn already too much on your valuable spase and readers' time but hoping to Hio the VVaikato produce rapidly to the fiunt next season.—l am, yours etc., John Mokgan. Birmingham, England, June, 18'Jl.
