RAGLAN.

Accidents. —Several severe accidents have happened to th.'se engaged in bush-felling :it Mangati. Amongst others, Mr Williams had the misfortune to cut his arm with an axe, and a man of the name of Harvey received a rather severe wound on the head through a branch of a tree falling upon him whilst working in the bush. A native, named Kopua, whilst cutting down a small tree, was also injured by the axe of another native, which accidentally slipped, cutting Kopua- on the leg. Mr Pretty also received a rathere severe cut in the calf of the leg from the slipping of his axe. Dr. Bay has been in attendance upon all those injured, and under his care they are progressing towards recovery. Mutual Improvement Society.—An interesting meeting of this Society was held in the Public Library, Raglan, on Wednesday evening, loth July, when Mr Rendell occupied the chair. A very interesting paper was read by Mr Henry on "The Ingoldsby Legend?," and several of the members present took part in the proceedings. . Ball.—The opening ball of the season was given by the Raglan bachelors in Sutton's hall on Friday evening, 17th July. Messrs Oliver and Jerome ably officiated as M.C.'s. The supper, which was admirably served, was laid out in Mrs Kenny's house adjacent to the hall. Dancing was kept up with spirit until the early hours of the morning, a largo number being present. Volunteers.—A meeting of the Raglan contingent of the Te Awamutu Cavalry was held in the Council Chambers to consider business in connection with tho encampment and other matters, also for the inspection of the new uniforms. Lieutenant Somerset occupied the chair. Temperance Meeting.—The monthly meeting of the Raglan Gospel Temperance Mission took place on Friday evening, 17th July. Musical selections were given, and tho chairman (Rev. \V. Williams), in addressing tho meeting, expressed his regret at the loss they would feel in the departure from thoir midst of the Misses Harris, who have left for Kihikihi, as they had so ably assisted not only in the Sunday-school, but also in musical entertainments, and he felt sure they would be greatly missed. Champion Swedes.—Since it has been known that Yates' prize of 4115 for the iieaviest specimen of these routs has fallen to Mr T. B. Hill, of this place, quite a number are already preparing for the coming competition for prizes to be given by that firm. Mr Hill, with his usual liberality, has given a considerable portion of the money awarded to the Public Library and Church funds. Library Concert.—A concert was held in tho Raglan School on tho evening of Friday July 21th. for tho purpose of providing additional funds for this institution, Mr Pegler occupiod tho chair. The following programme which was of a varied and interesting character was gone through and a large company were present: Quartette, "Merrily over the waves," Misses Wallis and Rendell and Messrs Rendell and Wallace ; instrumental piece, Mrs Raistrick; recitati&n, " Why should tho spirit of mortal bo proud?" Miss Macdonald; sc ng, " Barney take me home," Miss Alexander ; instrumental pieco, " Bells of Aberdely," Miss Cogswell; song, "Awful little scrub," (in character), Mr K. 0. Wallis; quartette, "Pro Phundo Basso," Misses Wallis and Rendell and Messrs Rendell and Wallis; song, "Anchor weighed," Mr Sowell; instrumental pioce, " Old Folks at Hoiro," Mrs Mathias ; song, " Gates of tho West," Miss Wallice ; recitation, "Shamus O'Brien," Master W. Wallace; song, "British Lion," Mr Rendell, song, "Golden Love," Mrs Raistrick ; reading, " Village Choir," Mr B. Rendell; reading, "Mr Spoopendyke" and the '• Bad Boy," Mr Henry ; quartette, "The Bells," Muses Wallis and Rendell and Mossrs Rendell and Wallis. The performance throughout was of a very excellent character, the various items being much appreciated by those present and one and all were heartily applauded. A vote of thanks to those so kindly assisting and to tho chairman for presiding was followed by all present singing tho " National Anthem." Tho result of the concert was to placo betweon two and three pounds to the funds of tho library for the purpose of purchasing new book*.
