FEDERATION.
(liV KI.KCTUIC TiaKUll.U'H—COl'YltlUlfV ) London, July 24. A Di.-ji'A'iru from Lord Onslow, Governor of New Zealand, to Lord Knutsford, Secretary of State, dated May S, is published in which the former states thu reason Now Zealand was unable to join the Australiau Federation is owing to the Farmers' Alliance urging its members to hold wheat crops until prices in Australia advanced sufficiently high-
Lord Onslow, in a dispatch to the Secretary for the colonies, say.s that iu the opiiiiDU of tlie majority of puojMe in New Zealand, federation is outside the realm of practical politics. The prospect of consolidation of debts and conversion into a general commonwealth loan at a reduced rate of interest would alone tempt New Zealand to join.
Sydney, July 27,
The Sydney Morning ii'-rald thinks Lord Onslow's despatch to Lord Knutsford, giving the reasons why New Zealand is not likely to enter the Australasian Federation, may be accepted as that colony's limil decision on the question.
