School Co.mmittke.—Tho now school committee have set a good example to similar bodies by putting their .shoulders to the wheel and doing much-neoded gravotliug about the school-grounds. On one Saturday recently soveral of the members of the committee turned out with a dray and picks and shovels, and as the result of their day's work sufficient material was obtained to spread on the paths around the schoolhouse and to fill up tho holes in them, and they thus made the grounds passable for the winter and nut them in a thorough state of repair.—At a recent meeting of the school committee it was resolved to ask tho Education Board for to as a special grant to enable the committee to effect certain improvements, now much needed in connection with the school tank, water supply, etc.—The late earthquake shook the school building so violently that some of the sleepers under it. which were rotten, became displaced, and the school-house is now somewhat out of the perpendicular. Mr Twerseu is justly esteemed for his manv excellent qualities as a man, a colonist, "and a neighbour. Many and anxious were the enquiries made at his residence during his illness, and much satisfaction was expressed at his return homo somewhat better.
SWKKT Briars.—Mr Charles Broomfield, who bad the contract fur clearing the marl on the Whatawhata (Int. has done the work well. Ho has thoroughly eradicated these horrible shrubs, having literally draped them up by the roots. This is really a great boon to the settlers ami travellers. It is high time that not only the private owners but also the Government were compelled to clear their farms and suctions of these abominable pests. The Public Works Act should be enforced as regards .private owners ; and I am clad to see that *epsare being taken by the Hon. John Bry*o to obtain an alteration of the law so as to compel the Government to clear sweet briar, gorso, etc., off Crown lands and reserves.
