CHRISTIANITY V. SECULARISM.

Wk are in receipt nf a sermon entitled as above, preached by the U"v. Charles If. Garland, at St. Paul'.-, Church, Cambridge, on thi' 17t!i May last, and which has been published and issued in pamphlet form by request. The title of the pamphlet is sufficiently striking to arrest attention. Mr Garland starts by defining Secularism and Christianity, and by showing that the respective teachings are antagonistic. The rise of Secularism is attributed to two causes—the first being the failure of the Christian Church to roach the ideal of Christianity, and the second a determination to get rid of everything supernatural and explain everything inysteriuus, Mr Garland claims on the first point that because Christians do not live up to their professions it is no argument against Christianity ; on the second, that mysteries abound in science, and that freedom of will is also an unsolved problem. The life, character, and success of Christ are also claimed as mysteries, which confirm the Divine r rigin of His mission. The preacher then states that Christianity occupies the wholo programmo of Secularism for the amelioration of mankind, and it) an infinitely better way. This hypothesis is argued at length in the view and value of human life and in the ethical teaching of Christianity. The sufficiency of Christianity in times of sorrow and death and in the hope of a hereafter is claimed as ,1 province with which the Secularist cannot, deal. Mr Garland concludes byalliiniing that Secularism simply criticises Christianity, and has nothing to offer in its place. The sermon abounds in quotations from theological and sceptical writers, and is throughout temperate in its tone. The language employed is terse and pointed, and tho arrangement of the subject is admirable. The pamphlet before us is a by no means au unsuccessful attempt to deal with an important subject, and will well repay a perusal by Christian and Secularist alike.
