ROYAL HOTEL, HAMILTON.
TO THK KiHTOK. — V:ui'«n*-< riuii'iiir-' h»vn lionn Myii;u r ali i'iit in connection with the disappearance . f I petition to the Lie. nsmg C.mmissi"iK; s in t ivoor "1 giautiag a license to .Ii S"lin:t/.'', the present occupant ..f the above, hi.ti'l. The facts are as follows At the ri'illl.-~t nf several gentlemen who symp.ithiM'd with Mr Seinilt/.e, 1 unitertook ti obtain and procured the name--nf ~i)M'nty h"ii-eholders or well-known ie-1-di-nt- in th" ilistricl. I the evcnuik' ot Thiirsdav. ISrh inst. (previous t. > the -j> ting >.f tin' committee), 1 handed the petition to Mr Sehult/.e, hut as he was bu-y at thn tin, ■. h,i unfortunately plajwl it awn-and forgot that he had tecived it. \ did not hear nf Its disappearance till time after the committee had sat, when a search was instituted which revealed the fact that it had been so carefully put away that its reception had been forgotten. Mr Schultze exonerates me from all blame in the matter. I encloso a copy of the petition, which I hopo yon will publish in order that the public may see (as well as the Coinniis•■ioneis) the opinion entertained nf Mr SchulUe by those best qualified to judge, viz., the surrounding residents who signed in his fa\our almost without an exception, and other patrons of the hotel. A very hostile feelint,' to the Commissioners, owini' to their arbiuarv action, has arisen iu the. borough ; indeed, any impartial person who reads the report iu your issue of the 2;jrd inst., must feel coiivincd that the decision which virtually turns Mr Sclmitzo out of the hotel—anil might, was he not. so well known io the trade, do him a serious injury -was a foregone conclusion. There was nothing in Constablo Murray s evi icnce to justify the decision, the police did not object to a renewal, whilst the complaints made by married women iniptht happen to any publican in tho Waikato. If such complaints are to be entertained and acted upon without cross-examination by the parties directly interested, then, indeed, the prohibitionists will have an easy task— they have only to subsidise one or two women ill each district and the tiling is done. A few more such exhibitions of unbridled authority, as many of the Licensing Committees have shown, will soon lead to the repeal of the Licensing Act, which, under competent and impartial men, would have done much good.—l am, ka., T.
