WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of tho Waipa County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Ohaupo, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Present: Crs. Lang (chairman), Smith, Shepherd, Exelby, Kusabs, Finch and Taasdale. Mr A. Armstrong, county engineer, was also in attendance. Engineer's Report.—The Engineer, in his monthly report, stated that the contractor tor sanding along tho OhaupoHamilton Road had not executed portions of his work in a satisfactory manner, but he had been notified to rectify the defects. Tho repairs to the bridge over tho Waikato River at Cambridge are well advanced towards completion. On opening out the work, 3ome of the sheathing was found t ) be rotten, and is now being replaced. Tho Engineer arranged with the manager of the Rotorangi Station regarding the scouring out of the side drains along the ewamp road, and the work is now in hand. Ho also recommended that the set of pipes under the Te Awamutu-Kihikihi Road, near Messrs J. Bridgman's and Cumpstone's property, be taken up and re-laid, the joints "being made with Portland cement, as tho pipes are now completely choked up with willow roots. The Engineer was instructed to have the work, recommended in his report with reference to tho pipos on tho Kihikihi-Te Awainutu Road, done. Slauc.htkwng License.—An application for a slaughtering license was granted to D. Turnwald.

Native Kates.—The Hawke's Bay County Council forwarded a copy of a circular letter forwarded to the Colonial Secretary, urging that some legislation be passed empowering local bodies to levy and recover rates on native lands. —The matter was deferred.

Finance,—The following is a statement of riding expenditure for the period ending June 9th 181)1.—Newcastle: Amount of vote, £34; amount expended, £113 l_7s; overspent previous allocations, £248 9s 3d ; total expended to date, £312 (is fid; over spent, £278 (is sd. Tuhikaramea : Amount of vote, £20 ; amount expended, £33 9s lOd; total expended to date, £33 9s lOd : credit balance from previous allocations, £20 13s 4d; to expend, £13 3s Gd. Hamilton : Amount of vote, £52; amount expended. £3119s 8d ; total expended to date, £3119s 8d; credit balance from previous allocations, £58 lis 8d ;to expend, £78 12s. Pukekura: Amount of vote, £89 ; amount expended, £10110s 7d ; overspent previous allocations, £283 13s lOd ; total expended to date, £355 4s 3d ; overspent, £290 4s 5d ; Mangapiko : Amount of vote, £92; amount expended, £97 3s 6d ; overspent previous allocations, £32 19s lOd ; total expended to date, £1303s 4d ; overspent £38 3s 4d ; Rangiaohia : £93; amount expended, £04 19s Od ; overspent previous allocations, £18 18s 3d ; total expended to date, £83 17s 9d ; to expend, £9 2s 3d. Expended on bridges and culverts Newcastle, £193 12s 7d ; Hamilton, £22 18s, Pukekura, £277 0s 9d ; Mangapiko, £02 7s *d. The Clerk reported that the county fund was £110 7s Id in credit. Thee!*.—'The Manager of the School of Forestry at Whatigarei forwarded a number of catalogues of surplus trees, and stated that he would be glad to receive orders for trees. REBATE.--Mr .Tames Hally on behalf of Mrs John Hill applied for a rebate in the rates due to the Hamilton Road Board and County. The Chairman proposed that naif the amount due to the Hamilton District be remitted to Mrs Hill. —Sjconded by Cr. Finch and carried.—The county rate was allowed to stand over at present. AUDIT Fees.—Hon. J. Bryce wrote stating that the matter of the deduction of audit fees from subsidy would have his attention during the coming session. Te Rore.—The Crown Lands Office has recommended that the Crown Lands at Te Rore be re-classified as rural lands, and offered for selection under the Land Act Amendment Act 1887. Dog Registrar.—With reference to the appointment of constables as Dog Registrars, the Council decided not to make any change this year. Soldikiis' Bridge.—James Grix offered to widen the road at the Soldiers' Bridge to 15ft, for 10s per chain, and to put in a culvert necessary for 10s. The Engineer said the offer was a reasonable one, but he was afraid the season was too late to go on with tho work. The matter was left in the hands of the engineer to get the work done when the weather is suitable. Hamilton Outlying District.—The clerk reported the credit balance on this account was £22 17s lOd. Several settlers applied to the Council to have the road to the Te Rapa Station which is now almost impassable, repaired. The matter was left over for the present, there being no funds available. The following accounts handed over by the late Board were passed : H. Hunter, 8s; J. Goodwin, ss; T. Tebbs, £19 13s lOd ; J. Reid, £24 Is } T. G. Sandes, £2 2s ; J. S. Edgecumbe, £8 8s 4d; and it was decided that the amount which is overdrawn bo charged interest at the usual bank rate. Rate*.—'The clerk was instructed to sue the trustees of C. Day's property at Whatawhata, for outstanding rates. Tkndeus.—The following tenders were dealt with : No. 131. Repairing the Alexandra bridge, W. J. Smith, £29 15s, 0s 3d per hundred being allowed for old timber. Finch and Miles, £38 2s Od. Smith's tender being the lower, was accepted. No. 132. Work on the Te Awa-mutu-Ohaupo road, W. Patton, 4s Od per chain for forming, etc., 8s per chain gravelling, £1 for making up road ; W. Given, 7s per chain ;9s 0s per chain ; £1 10s for making up road. Mr Patton's tender was acoepted. RcKUHia.—The clerk was instructed to write asking Messrs Williamson Bros, if they would contribute anything towards cleaning out the drain alongside the Station road, there not being sufficient funds available for the work. Whatawhata.—Cr. Shepherd reported that he had authorised the putting ->f a culvert across the watertable at the Post Office. He also asked that the briars be removed from the County road through tho township. The cost would be almost £2 10s. It was decided to get the work done at the above cost.
