WHAINGAROA ROAD BOARD.
TO TtlK KDITOK. Silt,—On reading the chairman's review at the ratepayers' meeting, as published in your issue nf the Uth inst., I regret to see my remarks are somewhat, curtailed, with the result nf n misapprehenison to thn public »nd latepayers who were not present. Will you allow me to state such curtailments make me to say I regretted the working expenses were an heavy. It should have been: Although apparently heavy, they were not so, hut at their normal amount computable with efficiency; and if the amounts of refunds were taken into consideration it would be apparent to the ratepayers that every endeavour is made by the Board to protect ratepayers' interests. The working expenses would have been less but fcr tho exorbitant audit charges and the unwarranted hostility of some members of tho Raglan County Council to the Whaingaroa Road Board in particular, necessitating the issue of two sets of circulars to ratepayers, who decided not to be merged into the Council against thoir wish ; hence the petition for not merging has some £5200 in rateable values for retaining the Board. I feel it a justice and duty to the clerk t:> state that not a farthing is charged by him for the many extra duties performed in conducting petitions, nominations, elections, and collecting. The Board desire by careful expenditure to keep the general rate as low as possible ; and to protect the ratepayers' pockets is their first consideration, with the cheerful result of a credit balauce always in hand,—Yours, &c, John Moon, Chairman. Wnitetuna, May 10, 1S!)1.
