We wore shown yesterday a most ingenious littlo article made i>( wire, and rightly named the magic transforming stand, patented by a Mr Shiold, .of Dunedin. By very simple manipulation it forma a number of useful and oruamnntal designs, and amongst many others it can bo made into a wool, string or egg net a (lower or fruit stand, a candle-holder, a nut for pot-plants, a card or fruit basket, a lamp-shade frame. These do not by any means oshaust the various designs of this wonderful little stand, but by a little practice the combinations are of great variety, and are so simple that a child can work, and the price—one shilling and sixpence—brings it within everybody s compass, Our Sydney correspondent writes: —"A curious decision has been given i" a case" in which a man was charged with obtaining I'll by moans of a valuless cheque from a publican. At the time of obtaining the money ha represented that ho was tho proprietor of an hotel at Singleton. His obliging host made enquiries, but found hia story to be false, and handed him to the police, by whom ha was kept in durance vile. Here comes the funny part of the affair. Tho cheque was post-dated, and thus was not payable until some tiuio after tho prisoner had been placed in custody. When the caso came for trial boforo the magistrates, the defence was raised that he had been prevented by his imprisonment from providing for the cheque, and, therefore, must be rolnasod. Tho magistrate adopted this view of the case, holding that there was ivi evidence to sho\>' that tho prisoner would not have taken steps to haio had the cheque paid had ho been at liberty, and he was therefore discharged. It seems probable that a great impetus will be given to the trade of passing valueless cheques, but they will in future tie post-dated."
