Immediately on receipt of the above message, Lord Shrewsbury wirod to toe referee withdrawing from the match and instructing him to pay over the forfeit to Lord Lonsdale as he considered he was not treated in a sportsmanlike manner. Lord Lonsdale decided to run tho distance and settle all wagers that were made agaiust time. He was to drive five miles with single horse, return witli pair, go back with four-in-hand team, and finish up with pair riding one as postillioti.
