A miner, Frank Vcddar, employed at the Fame of Fortune mine, had his eye injured by an explosion of powder. A lad, Hurry Brown, employed al. the Sliortland .sawmill had the middle linger of the left hand cut off by a circular .saw. RKKFTON, Last Night. J/cnry Saitdes was killed by a fall of earth on the Midland Railway works. Ho was working at the fnce when the fall occurred. He leaves a wife and grown up family. RUSSELL, Last Night. Inspector McGovcrn leaves to-morrow to tako charge of the Nelson-Greymouth district. Mr McGovcrn will be much missed in this district, where he is universally popular, and has proved himself an eflicient officer. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Dr Koch's lymph was administed today to a female patient in the Hospital, 22 years old, in the earliest stages of phthisis. It will be tried in a case of chronic lupus before the end of the
week. Recently Nils Jaeobsen, a Swede, undergoing a life sentence for manslaugher of Mat Skriver at Little River in October, ISB7, received the following document from America, through his brother : " This is to certify that w<; the undersigned, have heard Charles Newman, when he was in Brooklyn, state that ho was the man that committed the crime in killing the Finlander, Mat Skriver, and that Nils Jaeobsen, now ar_ rested, is not guilty of the said crime." Signed in the preconce of t.'has, AY. N. Akberg, Notary Public, John Johnson, and Olaf Jonsen. Dated, Felnury !)th., 1891. The document has been forwarded to the Minister of Justice. A man named Newman was with Jaeobsen when the homicide was committed, and he was arrested but discharged.
NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. The manager at the petroleum works intends to-day to case down the well to its bottom, so as to let (iff all the water and them lo pump the oil that accumulates during the day. This will give a good idea (if the value of the indication*, and until this test is made there is no use speculating in the oil, which so far comes oft the surface water. .Sample of the petroleum have been tested by a local chemist, and found to be exceedingly good. The census returns for the Borough of New Plymouth, having an area of 750 acres, is 33.">:5, sho'-ving un iucrea.-e in five years of -:W. There were 107 tons of butter shipped from the breakwater during tlv: last four weeks.
