The proposals with regard to education were a complete surprise to tho Opposition, who regard them indicative of an early amalgamation of the Unionists and the Tories-. The latbr are fairly pleased, though a section of the party appears dubious about the effect of the proposal-: until the interests of voluntary schools are secured. The Opposition will probably allow the proposal for tree education to pass, but will take the iir.sl opportunity of placing the voluntary schools under popular control.
